How to Make CBT Homework Easier to Start

The first field of your thought record asks the client to “describe the situation.” That’s the prompt. What your client actually does when they open the form is read the prompt, look at the cursor, type two words, delete them, retype, look at the time, decide they don’t have the bandwidth right now, and close the tab.
Forty-five seconds on screen. Form abandoned. By Friday it’s still abandoned. By session it’s blank.
The starting friction is almost always in the first field. Most thought records open with a long-text prompt that wants narrative. Narrative is the most expensive cognitive output your client could hand over. Holding a memory in mind while finding the right words and typing them is the slowest part of any form.
A first field that demands narrative produces clients who stop at the first field. Replace it with something the brain can hand over in three seconds.
A date and time picker first. “When did this happen?” Two taps, no typing.
A short-answer with a one-word target. “What’s one word for what was happening?” Three letters, four letters, done.
A scale slider. “How loud was the feeling, 0 to 100?” One swipe, one number.
Once the form is started, the rest of the fields connect easier. Cognitive activation has a step function around the first field. Once the client has written something, they keep writing. It’s why a form that opens with a quick scale rating gets thoughtful long answers in field three, while a form that opens with “describe the situation” gets nothing.
In my-cbt, the worksheet builder lets you pick the type of every field. You can take the standard thought record, swap the first field from a long-text “describe the situation” prompt to a date-and-time picker plus a one-word context field, and watch the completion rate change in two weeks. The clinical content of the form is the same. The first field stops being a wall.
The motivated clients get blocked at the first field too. This isn’t about how committed your client is to the work. It’s about cognitive cost at the moment of starting. Lower the cost. The form gets done.
